About Matchstick Communications

At Matchstick Communications, we believe that the power of an honest story - told well - can create great change. We help transform executives into compelling speakers, turn program participants into powerful advocates, and discover and develop the narratives organizations need to open minds and achieve breakthrough fundraising.

Our work spans from boardroom presentations to events that reach thousands, from films that shift public perception to pitch decks that secure transformational funding. We've helped clients launch campaigns and reframe complex social issues for diverse audiences. What sets us apart is our ability to uncover the authentic story within individuals and organizations—then coach speakers to deliver with the confidence and precision that drives results.

The Role

We're seeking a self-determined and experienced speechwriter to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who has honed their craft in the fundraising and philanthropy space and is ready to take on greater project leadership responsibilities while continuing to develop their expertise in values-driven storytelling.

Working closely with the CEO, you'll collaborate with a range of speakers—from program participants sharing personal stories of transformation to organizational leaders and CEOs presenting strategic vision. This work focuses on sharp, authentic storytelling that drives effective fundraising and advances social change. Willingness to work hard, give and receive feedback with grace, and a sense of humor are a must.

What You'll Do

Story Development & Speechwriting

  • Interview program participants, advocates, and organizational leaders to uncover stories of transformation.

  • Write, edit, and refine compelling speeches for a signature fundraising event that honors remarkable individuals who have overcome extraordinary challenges.

  • Develop strengths-based narratives that showcase resilience, community impact, and the power of nonprofit programming.

  • Write speeches that translate complex social issues—from homelessness to immigration to education equity—into moving, accessible stories that inspire major gift support.

Event Strategy

  • Assist with speechwriting for a signature fundraising event attended by philanthropists, CEOs, investors, and community leaders.

  • Collaborate closely with event producers, development teams, and organizational partners to ensure cohesive storytelling across the program.

  • Manage multiple speaker preparations with varying backgrounds and needs simultaneously.

  • Create content that balances celebration of individual achievement with compelling calls to action for continued support.

Executive & Participant Coaching Support

  • Partner with our CEO  to help speakers present their stories with confidence and authenticity.

  • Adapt writing style to diverse voices, ensuring each speaker's unique perspective and background shines through.

  • Support speakers through an intensive preparation process, including rehearsals and presentation refinements.

  • Navigate sensitive storytelling that honors personal experience while focusing on strength, agency, and resilience.

What We're Looking For

We value and welcome applicants of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities. We believe that diverse perspectives make our work stronger, and we’re committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Experience & Expertise

  • 3-5 years of professional speechwriting experience, ideally with a focus on fundraising and philanthropy.

  • Proven track record of writing speeches that have successfully moved audiences to donate, volunteer, or take action.

  • Project management experience with demonstrated ability to lead client relationships.

  • Portfolio of speechwriting samples that showcase range, voice, and style.

Skills & Approach

  • Sharp, compelling writing style that prioritizes clarity and authenticity.

  • Experience with and passion for values-based and strengths-based storytelling techniques.

  • Ability to quickly grasp complex social issues and translate them into accessible narratives.

  • Strong interviewing skills to extract authentic stories from diverse stakeholders.

Personal Qualities

  • Strong self-determination and ability to work independently in a remote environment.

  • Someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment with a good sense of humor, collaborative spirit and a growth mindset.

  • Exceptional ability to receive, process, and implement feedback with grace and skill.

  • Ability to deliver under pressure.

  • Passion for social change.

  • Based in the United States with ability to travel occasionally for client meetings and events.
